Southern Exposure &
Word Arts Live
The Word Arts Live! Project seeks to address the gap we see in identity and representation of Word-Artists in the broader arts context as well as the need for better exposure, shared resources and advocacy.
Over the course of a year we are partnering with Alexandra Neighbourhood House, author-educator Heidi Greco and Surrey Muse founder Fauzia Rafique, and are planning a series of events to explore vital artistic and pragmatic topics and issues; educate word-artists in verbal arts and presentation skills, entertain through the Word-Arts Live! author/poet/performer series leading to the larger event Southern Exposure. We aspire to be inclusive and multi : cultural-generational-disciplinary.
Southern Exposure, features innovative word-artists: trailblazing poet, Heather Haley; award winning fiction writer and poet, Marion Quednau; playwright and musician, Kempton Dexter; writing for healing teacher, Taslim Jaffer and comic, playwright, master storyteller, Jacques Lalonde. "Word-Artists have a profound effect on societal change and the shaping of the cultural landscape. We assembled this group of multi-faceted presenters to engage with the Peninsula arts community" says Virginia Gillespie. "South Surrey is ripe for the kind of cross-pollination that Southern Exposure offers. Who knows what might grow from the thought-provoking presentations, stimulating conversation and fun?"
