We were invited by the Friends of the Plot to devise a mixed-arts, pop-up project. Through listening to the land, people and creatures via interactive activities, we co-created a community event.
Tiptoe Through the Garden
A family-friendly-free-fete at the Plot Sharing Garden
Several pop-up, interactive art activities at The Plot resulted in the longing from neighbours and volunteers to celebrate. The large site holds the community-created sharing vegetable and flower gardens, Medicine Wheel, Heart Labyrinth, and Wishing Tree that have helped transform an at-risk, vacant city lot into a place for folks to visit, participate, and socialize.
Our challenge was to devise a whimsical, inclusive event and procession to interconnect the reclaimed areas and to include the community in planning and hosting.
The event kicked off with a kazoo procession from the Medicine Wheel across the garden to the Heart Labyrinth and Wishing Tree, passing through the gardens and the field we named “The Alley of Funny Walks”.
Treats and refreshments were offered at the Fairy Garden Afternoon Tea with old time fiddle music by Brad. The afternoon concluded with Indigenous storytelling by Grandma Amy whose vision sparked creating the Medicine Wheel and Roxanne. Kat Szabo offered face painting. Elizabeth Carefoot delighted all with her playful fairy godmother's presence and found a dancing partner with a surprise visit of Barbara the fairy who interacted with children. Many stories, relationships, and new memories were planted.
"We are a capricious band of mixed arts devisors with a passion for natural spaces and public engagement."
