Summer Solstice 2013

Yes, the longest day did indeed occur here in Scotland. This photo is from the Isle of Lewis called a black house, a crofter dwelling from the 18oo’s. Although it was not taken at the exact moment of sunrise, or sunset, I feel it exemplifies that sense of awe and mystery found in these historic stone structures as light enters through stone.

The peat fire burning in the dwelling adds to the mysterious quality. Imagination is easily stirred and dances in the smoke. Here is a quote from a poet from another set of islands nearby, the Orkneys.

“The Orkney Imagination is haunted by time” George Mackay Brown

May this Solstice bring you deep peace.
